Black Woman, Beautiful Woman
Golden was the voice that spoke through you,
golden was the seed of boldness you sowed in the minds of black women,
energizing them to face the world cause the world has became a room filled with limitations,
limiting their thoughts,
their imaginations,
limiting how fast they fly and dream,
for to the world,
their dreams were invalid.
Phenomenal woman,
you stood firm and became a rock for others to lean on,
to rest on.
You became a beacon of hope for black women morphed into tiny boxes of inefficiencies,
you showed them their sufficiencies,
morphed into tiny boxes of imperfections,
you showed them their perfections,
morphed into tiny boxes of impossibilities,
you helped them discovered express possibilities.
Black woman, beautiful woman,
amidst the annals of deep-seated racism and segregation,
you bargain with life and won,
not once,
not twice but with gigantic combination of determination you flagged off womanhood.
Rejecting societal definitions of what a woman should do and how to do it,
what to say and how to say it.
Beautiful woman,
where failure was mentioned you overcame with success, where setback was mentioned you race through like a superwoman,
breaking down iron bars,
iron doors and not a day went by without you protesting, advocating for the rights of those whom God placed in your hands.
You see,
this woman battle with loneliness and won,
battle with silence for eight years and won,
and became a voice to all those whose voices were taken away from them and today our voices are heard and respected because she refused to be silence.
I celebrate you,
Black Woman, Beautiful Woman
Maya Angelou.
